Key Points

  • Start by pulling the pin or safety clip from the fire extinguisher's handle. This step is essential because it prepares the extinguisher for use.
  • Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames. Focusing on the base helps to cut off the fire's source of fuel.
  • While holding the extinguisher with one hand, use your other hand to squeeze the handle or trigger. This action releases the extinguishing agent (usually a chemical or powder) onto the fire.
  • Sweep the extinguisher from side to side in a controlled manner, covering the base of the fire. Continue sweeping until the flames are completely out.

  • Lack of training: If you are not properly trained in fire suppression techniques and do not have the necessary firefighting equipment, it's best not to attempt to fight a fire.
  • Large, spreading fires: If the fire is already significant and spreading rapidly, it is generally safer to evacuate the area and call professional firefighters.
  • Toxic smoke or chemicals: Fires in industrial or chemical facilities can release toxic fumes that are extremely hazardous to health.

  • In case of a fire or any other emergency, dial 911 or your local emergency number as soon as possible. Provide clear and accurate information about the situation, your location, and any hazards present.
  • In an emergency, remaining calm is crucial. Panicking can hinder your ability to make clear decisions and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
  • If you are in a burning building, evacuate immediately through the nearest safe exit. Never use elevators during a fire. If you encounter smoke, stay low to the ground to avoid inhaling toxic fumes

  • Many fire departments provide EMS services, including first aid and emergency medical care. They are often the first to respond to medical emergencies.
  • Fire departments work to prevent fires through public education, building inspections, and enforcement of fire codes and regulations.
  • Some fire departments have specialized teams to handle hazardous materials incidents, such as chemical spills or leaks.
